Do they usually go hand and hand? I've read about some old champions who could roam free through town without incident but were terrors in the []. Any truth to this?

BTW no they don't go hand in hand one has nothing to do with the other both are very different traits. DA exists in many breeds but gameness is something that is unique to box dogs more specifically the APBT. DA can be isolated meaning sometimes the dogs will pick and choose who they get along with and then you have dogs who are full blown DA and won't get along with any dogs regardless doesn't mean those same dogs posses gameness there are plenty of DA curs that couldn't make it in the box and failed to display any level of gameness when the opportunity was presented. Both different traits however some dogs are smart enough to differentiate between business and just being a regular dog outside the box. It really depends on the dog ... Most probably can't do both but there have been exceptions to the rule.

There were a few dogs that could be around other dogs and animals outside the [],most do not though.Virgil of course is probably the most famous one. Also even a cur is dog aggressive in that it will fight but lose interest if things aren't going his way.So you can have an very aggressive dog that isn't game when the going gets tough,a game dog (rarely) that isn't aggressive outside the [] and game dogs that are aggressive in the [] and anywhere else (most common for a game dog) Hope this helps to some extent.

Uncle Bud Lived with 2 ratt terriers...They would get him fired up on ocasion and get him in trouble.i have a dog from the same family that gets along just fine with 2 jack russells. He actually slept with them until a year old...DA only shows the will to engauge but is no measurement of the heart.

Supposedly the great Jimmy Boots was ok around other dogs unless bumped hard. I know one of his descendents, Ch Sooner was also pretty mild. I had taken him to an ADBA show for the owner as he was out of town. We were in the ring and another dog ran into us. Sooner showed no interest but I damn near had a coronary.

    agreed.
and btw, Pincher was known to roam. the thinking at the turn of the century was a dog "developes/knows that much more". so yeah LONG ago, there were roamers who did get along with other dogs/animals. would be hard pressed to find that in today's times, with today's laws...

Now Frank I agree with you here lol ... I am not so much concerned with "acting" and putting on a show as long as the dog is proven to be bulldog where it counts. I don't understand the hype over dogs who will snap and growl at other dogs so what! It means absolutely nothing. I would much rather have a level headed driven dog like Virgil than I would a dog who just looses it's mind at the sight of another dog and looses all it's senses. That to me is not impressive.

Aggression has nothing to do with gameness period. You can site as many dogs as u want that roamed free or played with other dogs. But the plain fact is almost all dogs that are matched cross the pit to go into another dog ,but later quit. Some lose game but a lot quit so that says it to me

i believe it to be a defensive mechanism most times. nothing more then cur snapping from a bad upbringing. dogs are similar to people in a lot of ways. sort of like a loud mouth at a bar talking shit to impress a female. it's the quite fella in the corner that that's waiting to stuff you in the trunk & ware your skin as a mask then dance around like wild bill in some panties.

My best dog was silent and didn't even pull to get at a dog but when she was let go she was off like a rocket. then i had a bitch who would yelp and scream to get other dog and i thought she is gonna be great and when she was let go she got stoped imediatly so and the first bitch i mentioned stayed in my house with all my patts. and was fine unless they were female all my female patts had to stay in the other house.

in the [] da must be represented but gameness is shows most when a dog is on the bottom after much punishment and a timely event against superior or equal competion
