This is just to give ya'll in America the idea of the type of sentences handed down to dog fighters in South Africa. As you can see the sentences are very lenient for dog fighting over here.....nothing like what happens to you in the USA if they catch you.

    Dogfight duo convicted
Cape Town - Two of the six men on trial for illegal dogfighting in Plettenberg Bay were convicted and sentenced in East London on similar charges this week.
Anton van Blerk and Owen Butler, who both pleaded not guilty in the Plettenberg Bay case involving dogfighting on a smallholding in Ladywood in May 2011, were tried in the East London Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
Van Blerk was found guilty of being in possession of an animal for the purpose of fighting and was fined R15 000 ($1500) (or 18 months) of which R12 500 ($1250) (or 16 months) was suspended for five years.
Butler received a similar sentence for being in control of a property for the purposes of animal fighting. And he was fined R8 000 ($800) (or 10 months) suspended for five years, for allowing animals to be kept on his premises for fighting
Both men were also fined R4 000 ($400) (or six months) – entirely suspended for five years – for being spectators at an illegal dogfight.
The pair were among 12 people arrested in October 2008 for being involved in an organised dogfighting event on a Glendene smallholding near East London.
The men will have to appear in the Thembalethu Regional Court in George on May 14 for the Plettenberg Bay case.
They, along with their co-accused, Donald Wall of Victoria Park in Port Elizabeth, Rudi Wall of Queenstown, Peter Wall of Queenstown and Yorick Grobbelaar of East London, have pleaded not guilty

They only got sentenced this week six years later after they got caught lol. Shows you how efficient our judicial system is over here.

So Van Blerk effectively got sentenced to a 25 dollar fine or 2 months in prison because the sentence is suspended. In the case of Butler, he will only have to pay his $800 or do 10 months in the event that he gets caught again within 5 years (the sentence is suspended you see) so he effectively got off practically scot free. The $400 dollar or six months imprisonment will only come into effect if they are caught as spectators again within five years so they don't get to pay the $400.

Got to keep the prisons filled over here as well the lawyers, judges, Corps that build the prisons pockets full.

They're going back to court in May because they got caught twice so they are most probably going to end up paying the whole amount anyway which still isn't much. The SPCA used the Plettenburg bay bust as a huge publicity stunt for the purpose of extorting money from the public and for raising so called "awareness" about dog fighting in South Africa so I predict the Plettenburg Bay case will bring harsher sentences.

Prison is a BIG business. When a private Co takes over a prison system it's in the contract the state has to keep it filled @ I believe 95% capacity. Now lots of them are privately owned and ran for profit. IN return for taking the burden off the state ( which loses $) they get to have contracts with big companies or corporations to produce certain products. Prisoner who sign up for work programs are theones who make certain goods @ "SLAVE LABOR" prices. Then in return sold back to the CO or Corp @ a higher price creating a profit. Modern day slavery.

Honestly I think if ways to regulate and conduct organized matches would have been put together back in the days, we would of never seen a ban on the sport. At least not as early. Since there would of been ways to tax it I think it would have been left alone. Gov shut down due to tax reasons, all that Humane was a nice "Hearts and Minds" story.

You are still going to have people do it anyway regardless of what you do.

I agree whole heartedly with this, sport needs a sanctioning body to run the show. If this doesn't happen the game is doomed to failure.

It's over. The game is screwed. People might still set a few done, but we can't even report the matches so no one can verify what dogs are doing what
