YOUR RIGHT, IF THE WATER IS LEFT AROUNG ALL THE TIME THE DOG CAN TAKE IN WHAT HE NEEDS. THE BODY WILL ADJUST AND DIAL IT SELF IN . ONLY ON THE LAST DAY SHOULD U CONTROL WATER INTAKE:dogdrink: IT ALSO DEPENDS ON WHAT SUPPLIMENTS THE DOG IS ON . I BELIEVE THAT IN SOME SITUATIONS U NEED TO DO SOME THINGS TO HELP PULL EXCESS WATER OFF. IT ALL DEPENDS ON WHAT SUPPLIMENTS UR USING.

The reason you want to add water to the feed at a rate of 1oz of water for every two pounds of body weight is as follows. As a dog becomes in better condition most will not drink enough water to keep their system flushed out. Also during cooler weather dogs will restrict their own water intake and during hot weather they will many times drink to much water from dehydration working in the heat. When u add water to the food it makes sure the dog is getting enough water. It also helps keep stress off the dog as their system is always hydrated. The first fuel source your dog uses when working is the carbss stored in the glycogen cell. For every one part carbohydrate stored there must be two parts water. Without the proper amount of water in the feed the dog cannot completely fill their glycogen cells. And another point about keeping a dog uber hydrated during a keep is that by having the dog in this state creates a water jacket around the body raising the core temperature during work. When you remove a portion of this jacket the last two days of the keep by increasing the out flow of waternot by decreasing the inflow of waterthe dogs core average temperature core temperature drops during stress periods. You never want to withold water from a dog until a few hours before show time (8-12. Hours). Withholding water as a way of controlling hydration will be deadly. The only reason u withold it shortly before is to drop down on your weight and to ensure you dog doesn't pee in the show ring. As soon as your class is complete give dog some nice cup of chicken broth and and some cottage cheese and honey. About a tablepoon of each. After that go back to regular diet. One more added note by soaking your food in the water before feeding it greatly improves digestability of your chosen diet. Enjoy.

dog or a dingo which drinks the most......

a dingo can run 20kms a day on 1 drink.

constant supply of water to a dog raises the minimum hydration level that in turn needs to be cut back. Id give plenty before show time to lessen the chance of shock. YIS

Posts: 357 Re: water Being empty they will run their coolest. The last day of the keep you want your dog to run the coolest they ever been. Also when a dog is containing urine and stool their body tends to try absorb whatever they can during stress and this could include protiens in waste. Here's a tip for ya the last 2 weeks of a keep start weighing your dog 15 hours after u feed, once an hour. You will see your dog is dropping the food thru in a period of 15 -19 hours instead of 24. So how do u use that data? Do you wait to feed so that the dog doesn't be empty to long before workout? Do you just progress work and feed time to adjust to the ever increasing metabolism? Do you give the dog more food at 17 hours before next workout?

  9. Most dogmen reduce water to start to bring the red blood cell count up for better clotting ability. This is one of many reasons to cut the water down.

a keep is like trying to put a predator in peak hunting mode.........no excess water or fat. A pre-keep is handy to accustom a dog to harsh diet. In the wild they dont eat EVERY day. Most real oldtimers fed their dog UP during a keep.

WATER can be added to feed.....most feed is water anyway.
