    Pit Bull, Passerby Help Stop Speeding Motorcyclist

    7:25 p.m. PDT May 16, 2004 - A speeding motorcyclist who led police on a chase Sunday fell off the bike while trying to avoid a pit bull and a passerby tackled him, authorities said.

    Officers tried to stop the motorcycle at about 4 p.m. on Mission Boulevard. A police helicopter kept visual contact with the bike while officers pursued him on Interstate 5, State Route 163 and other city streets.

    The biker rode into Balboa Park, traveling on dirt trails to elude patrol cars, police said.

    Authorities said he fell off the motorcycle when a pit bull crossed his path. A man jumped on the suspect and held him until police took him into custody shortly before 4:30 p.m. The biker suffered scrapes and bruises, but did not need medical treatment, police said.
