Delaware crime: Pit bull foils rape attempt in Dover
    Man arrested for attacking woman
By TERRI SANGINITI • The News Journal • August 26, 2010

A 30-year-old man was charged with breaking into a Dover woman's home and trying to rape her, police said.

James B. Benson Jr., of the 900 block of Boggs Drive in Dover, was charged with attempted first-degree rape and four other offenses in the incident that happened about 2 p.m. Tuesday in the 500 block of N. West St.

The 18-year-old victim was asleep when she heard a knock on her bedroom door, said Dover police Capt. Tim Stump.

When she went to the door, she found Benson, who had entered her home without permission, police said.

The victim told police that Benson was an employee of her family's business until two weeks ago.

He grabbed the woman by the arm, lifted her onto his shoulders and placed both hands on her buttocks, according to court records.

Benson put her down when she told him to, but grabbed her from behind and pulled her close to him, police said.

He then threw her on the couch, causing her to cry. After that, her pet pit bull jumped up and got between the woman and Benson, police said.

After the dog became aggressive, Benson fled.

Officers arrested him early Wednesday at his home.

He was being held in Vaughn Correctional Center near Smyrna on $51,500 bail.

He faces a court hearing on the charges Sept. 3.
