More than a dozen pit bulls confiscated during a dog-fighting bust in Polk County last month are getting a new start at life.

The ASPCA will be picking up 18 of the dogs on Friday morning. The dogs will be moved to a temporary shelter out of state. The ASPCA will find permanent homes for the dogs.

The Polk County Sheriff's Office took possession of 69 dogs on October 22.

Some of the confiscated dogs were pregnant. As a result, 33 pit bull puppies were born at the Polk County Animal Shelter. Four of those puppies died shortly after they were born.

Of the 98 dogs that the sheriff's office had possession of, 77 dogs are being placed with animal welfare organizations.

59 dogs were already placed with the Polk County Humane Society, SPCA Florida and the Pinellas County Humane Society.

All of the dogs will be rehabilitated by the organizations and placed in new homes.

Hewitt Grant and Nickie Sanders were both charged with dog fighting and disposition of the pit bulls.

Dogs were removed from two Polk County locations during the bust, which happened in the overnight hours.
