in my experience money couldnt buy a producer right now, ive owned many good performers but very few producers , there has been many producers put too sleep over the years imsure coz they couldnt perform like there owners expected , a reminder for those new too this sport ,ur dog dont need to be a good performer too be a great stud or brood dog, just a tested dog from solid background can be enough and the rest is luck.
    good example ,
nasty boys sumo 1xgl that nobody wanted after his defeat,

rose killed most her pups and wasnt a good mother at all , buffy1xw,mary2xw,1gl,ali 1xw were all that high quality dogs and were outa an al game liter off 6 , her 2nd liter she killed , her 3rd litter she killed all but one was saved , 4th litter killed also . so she could produce good if the pups could be taken quickly and hand raised or asurrogate mother. good producer but bad mother

I don't know I didn't see them, but I was told that both Smutt and Jackie Brown could perform.

From what I understand Rose's littermates were both very good but owners pushed them to far before they could bring them out. So Rose had talent in her genes. A trusted friend see Mary and said she is was 100% dg.

Whilst I agree to a degree, I think a person can cut out the percentage of luck required if he is very selective in what he breeds his talentless plug to.

I definitely agree with the original post! But being a loser doesn't mean the dogs are not good performers, it just means that they didn't win that day. But yea I agree that performance and produce ability are two different things. Me personally, I will only build a yard off good performers. JMO

Good topic. This has been a fact of life forever. I know folks who love make "bulldog to bulldog" breedings with talented examples of the breed and never get anything worth feeding. Then I know folks who breed what a lot of folks would consider culls,...lo and behold so much fire the whelping box burns down.
There are some old rules about breeding for the third and fourth generations, and knowing a line in and out is key when making decisions and all that, but when it comes down to it very few truly know how to get that right balance of producers and performers in a line, and it all looks like a crapshoot to the rest.

This subject drives me crazy because it gives novices the wrong idea. Everyone keeps saying producing and performing are two different things and then uses isolated examples to prove it. If you look at the ROM list a majority of the good producing dogs were also good performers-especially with the males. What repeating this idea does is encourage every newbie to breed their no good mutt, cause hell, he could produce. The fact is if you want to get any where in dogs you must first learn what a good dog is. Then you must breed only the good ones for a lot of years. After you have learned how to make good dogs using good dogs, then you have earned the right and the knowledge to make an exception. Truth is very, very few dogs are good producers and the chances of your poor to average dog producing are slim to none. More often then not in nature, like produces like. Because of filial degeneration(look it up) you can breed high class dogs and get average or poor ones. But if you start with poor ones in the first place and try to get good dogs the odds are stacked astronomically high against you. It is a rare dog indeed that can produce dogs that are better than themselves. So, sure any dog can produce, but it is highly unlikely and you stack the odds in your favor by only using good performers in the first place.

When you put it that way, it is hard to argue with you. You're right. A little explanation into who is successful breeding what others would consider unworthy dogs is in order whan discussing this stuff. Like you said, if you don't know what the hell you're looking at, you really have no business breeding dogs,...much less those that are less than exceptional.
