Is my female in heat?

Achilles: Tell that to the shelter workers in your area who put down thousands of pits a year! You might want to read the post Suki recently put up ... do you know there were 20,000 (yes, twenty thousand) APBTs put to death last year alone b/c there weren't homes for them?? And that was only in the San Fransico area! Think of how many are put to death nationally! Yet you want to encourage breeding for the wrong reasons? Not cool.

As for no shelters being in your area, go to the Pit Bull Rescue Central website. I'm sure you can find a APBT rescue center or shelter in your area. If you can't perhaps they aren't in your local shelters b/c they euth them on the spot. Ever think of that??

As for judging, there is no judging about it. There is black & white, right & wrong & it is wrong for anyone for anyone to be breeding for any reason than to better the breed. Period. If you doubt that why not volunteer at a shelter for a couple months & help euth all the great animals that come in the shelter. Then you can help bag them up & toss their cold, lifeless bodies in the city dump like yesterday's trash! (Yes, that's what they do w/ them!)

nancy: Yes, it does sound like your female is coming into heat. Separate your dogs ASAP or you may end up w/ an accidental litter. Your best bet would be to put the the male on a chain outside (he will dig out of a kennel) or sent him to live w/ relatives for a few weeks. If you insist on having him stay indoors w/ you confine him to a crate in another room w/ the door shut.

As for breeding him, his being big & smart are no reasons whatsoever to breed him. As one person stated there are tons of dogs just like getting put down every day. Plus, his being big is one reason not to breed him as most big bulldogs are not standard. But if you absolutely must have another dog of his bloodline why not get one from the breeder you bought him from? It has been found if you want to replicate a dog you go to the dog's father, not the dog itself.

And yes, I understand there are ppl who want pups off him, but most breeders here will tell you those who say they want one the loudest are the first ones to disappear when the litter is here & deposits are due! ;)

Here is are some links you might want to read. I think you'll like them. Here they are:

    http://www.game-dog.com/forums/showthread.php?t=11447

    http://www.game-dog.com/forums/article.php?a=124

And if you decide to breed I strongly urge you to volunteer in your local shelter. That way you know where some of your pups are headed & what they'll go through. Plus, you should particpate in rescue. It's the least any breeder can do.

That being said, weclome to the board. Please consider all the advice given to you here. Some ppl may come off as rough sometimes (even me) but we all love the breed & mean well.

    rocksteady I'll drink to that..

achilles.. what are you trying to do? help create more back yard bred puppies?
If this dog was of age, the owner educated and the dogs "show dogs" weight pull dogs, hunting dogs etc etc and proven to be top of the line best of the best dogs, then maybe responses would be different

Theres nothing wrong with wanting to learn and every post with the exception of yours states that ...you seem to be ENCOURAGING the demise of the breed.. not helping it.

Everyone loves their own dogs. I certainly love mine and i would love to have pups from each and everyone but unfortunetly, I understand that a) I do not have the time, energy, yard space or funds to keep every pup and by selling them i only contribute to the over population b) there is ALWAYS a better dog out there c) they will NEVER throw dogs that can replace them..

just because a dog is nice, pretty, well tempered and even a pointed show dog or has won weight pulls doesnt make it breeding quality nor should it be bred. Theres so much to understand.

And besides.. if you breed and keep everything you bred, that is not contributing to overpopulation,. but breeding pet dogs with the full intentions to sell is ... REMEMBER THAT.. nothing is wrong with breeding if you are keeping what you breed but to bred with full intentions of only keeping one then peddling the rest ....

Never bred a litter in my life, and doubtful I ever will. I know there are people producing dogs better than I will ever be able to so all I would be doing is contributing to the problem. If you arent bettering the breed, your hurting it. Plain and simple.

Your bitch probably ain't in heat yet but lets take no chances. Separate them until her heat passes. You can have her stay at someone else's yard or You can use a crate or a kennel or even bound the dog with a chain or cable. Make sure they don't breed the first time.

Well if she really cares about her dogs and her breed of dogs, then she will wait until the dog is at least 2 years old before breeding so the dogs are both physically and mentally mature. This gives apprx. 1 1/2 years to try and educate to stop this from happening. If we do absolutely nothing, the dogs will get bred. We might as well attempt to educate her as to why its not the right thing to do. If we fail, the breed fails a little more. But at least we tried :(

  7. WHAT IS THIS CHINA? YOU CAN BREED.... BUT YOU CAN'T. GIVE ME A BREAK. IF YOU ALL ARE SAYING THEY NEED TO LEARN ABOUT IT THEN HELP THEM. i MEAN IF YOU FEEL SO PASSIONATE ABOUT IT....IT SOULDN'T BE THAT BIG OF A DEAL TO HELP AND EDUCATE THIS PERSON ON WHAT THEY ARE GETTING INTO. THEY ONLY REMARKS I HAVE SEEN ARE HOW IT'S THE WORST THING A MAN COULD EVER DO. ALSO IF I AM READING ALL OF THIS RIGHT YOUR SAYING THAT THEIR IS A PROBLEM WITH HAVING BIG BLUES???....WELL EVERYONE HAS THEIR OPINION I GUESS. IT JUST REMINDS ME OF OLD MEN AT CAR SHOWS I ATTEND TELLING ME MY CAR IS WORTHLESS BECAUSE IT'S NOT ORIGINAL......FUNNY THING IS LAST YEAR IT WAS ON THE COVER OF CUSTOM RODDER AND SOLD FOR 85000.00 CRAZY WORLD WE LIVE IN. I LOVE MY BIG BLUES, RED NOSES, BULL DOG AND EVEN MY GIRLS SHELTIE. SO SAYING THEIR NOT WORTH THE PAPER THAT THEY ARE PRINTED ON IS A CRAZY STATEMENT TO ME. TOO YOU THAT PROBABLY MEANS AS MUCH AS YOUR STATEMENTS MEAN TO ME.....NOT A WHOLE HELL OF ALOT. REMEMBER WHERE WE LIVE AND IT IS ALWAYS BETTER TO EDUCATE SOMEONE THEN TO HAVE THEM DO WHAT THEY WANT OUT OF SPITE.

ACHILLES_213, I'm not taking sides but you do know that there is health issues associated with blues. I think breeding for blues isn't the smartest thing to do considering if you take the color out of the picture they are breeding for health problems.

On that note. This thread is getting kinda heated so I think I'm all done here.

Just wanted to say I love it when people compare dogs to inanimate objects. That's almost as bad as anthropomorphizing human emotions and needs onto the dogs.

Original Poster - Please step back and take a good look at why you're breeding these two dogs. If you don't intend to keep the whole litter for yourself -- or cull all the pups that you aren't keeping -- then you are not really breeding for yourself. Take your dogs out and compete with them at shows, or in weight pull, or obedience, agility, hunting, something. Then complete some level of health-testing. (Hips, elbows, cardiac, thyroid, patellas, eyes, ears.) And while you're working on that, you can be compiling a list of names and deposits from people who want a puppy from your pair. And write up a contract that requires spay/neuter of all pet-quality pups, and also requires the new owners to bring those dogs back to you at any point during their lives that they may have to "get rid of" them.

To answer your original question, she may not be in heat yet, but chances are she will be soon. I would board the male or send him to a friend's house for 3 weeks. It can be hell trying to keep two sexually viable young animals seperate, and one moment of "oops" means an accidental litter.

1.achilles you need to do some reading before you start rattling off your "asspinions". there are some very educated people in here that can help you learn a lot.

    2. ill say that any animal that is bred for designer reasons is a shame and that any line of designer animals isnt worth the paper its printed on.

    3. animals have feelings emotions thoughts and dreams. an animal life however is not worth that of a human (unless i dont like you and my choices are you and my dog lol)

    4. just like if you were having children you must consider why you are doing this and what will you do if things dont go as planned. because a all plans are great until they are put into action.

Thanks. As for you 14Rock, I am very well aware of the duties that involve in raising a litter and preparing a bitch for breeding. This is just the first time my husband and I have actually decided to do it ourselves.

First off you OBVIOUSLY have no clue what you are doing or you would know when your dog is in heat. Are you dogs papered? Have they been screened by a vet? Do they have a CGC or ATT? Are they champions in the show ring, weight pull...etc?OR is it just cause your dogs have the sexual organs to reproduce they should? Do you realise you are responsible for EVERY SINGLE pup that comes out of your female? Do you know that 12 months is to young to breed? I find it sad that your female is only 7 months and you already plan to breed her. It's sounds like you PURPOSELY bought her for breeding, which makes you a soon-to-be back yard breeder. In 8 or 9 short months your little piece of white paper will be hanging in the grocery store next to four or five others saying "Brendal Pitt Bull Puppies for sale father is 80+ ponuds both parents on remises" (I actually saw a sign today that said BRendal Pitt Bulls for sale Parents on remises).

My dogs are "worthy" enough to be bred. My male is very large, the smartest creature I have ever come in contact with, has great nature with all other animals and people, etc., etc., etc.

So just because my mom's german shepherd MIX is good with kids and is large and is smart she should breed him? BTW read some and you will notice that LARGE is not a good thing in this breed.... I HIGHLY doubt he is the smartest creature you have ever came in contact with. So you are telling me your FULL BLOODED PURE AS HECK PIT BULL is good around ALL animals......?????? Oh honey you are so lost not even Santa Claus could find you. I know I sound mean but I had to stay up for 4 weeks with an orphaned litter of BLUE RESCUED Pit Bull puppies, so I have a right.

The female is young but has been learbing all of her good habits from the male.

You mean to tell me that your female is the way she is because of your male. Do you think your male sits your female down and says "don't bite the mailman". UMMMMM your female should be learning all of her good habits from YOU! This still does not make either one of them breed worthy.

You don't know me so you do not need to judge me.

Ohh but I feel like I already know so much about you because you sound like every other back yard breeder.

We already have a waiting list of people ready to buy the pups.

ROFL! Do you actually think the guy who saw you walking your dog and said nice dogs I want a pup is still going to want a pup when they actually come???? Do you know everyone personally on this so called waiting list? Do you know what they are going to be doing with them? DO you know how many puppies might be in the litter, because their may be a whole lot more or a whole lot less than the list? Oh but if there is less I guess you will just breed again, huh?

I do understand the importance of spaying/neutering pets and that there are a mass amount of pits that get euthanized daily, but being that I love my dogs so much, I want to ensure that I will have a puppy from their bloodlines throughout my life.

BUT do you love your dogs offspring enough to ensure that they will not end up in the shelter or their pups or their pups. Think about it you are responsible for a whole lot of pups if you breed. Your 2 dogs their ... 7 pups those pups 39 pups those pups 70 pups and so on til just because of you (if some of them live that long) you have hundreds of Pit pups (one of which could be on the front page of a newspaper some day because you were breeding a bred that is supposed to be a working breed for peoples pets).

Let me ask you, some of these have been asked before.

    Are your dogs screened?
    Vaccinated?
    De-wormed?
Do they have any kind of Temperament testing?
Do they excel in any area besides being a Pet and loving the smell of flowers?
Do you have papers that shows 4 generations or more?
Are the people that are on your ... waiting list... screened?
Have they owned Pit Bulls and know how to take care of them?
Do they know that even though you say your male is friends with EVERY animal that this breed could rip into another dog at any minute?
Do you plan to keep whatever pup that comes out of your dogs that ends up homeless?
Or do you plan to hold them while they are being put to sleep?
You cannot afford to board, but do you have enough money for insurance on your dogs or the health screening or the mom's vitamins or anything that might happen while she is pregnant giving birth or if something happens to one of the pups?

You are in NO way ready to breed.

P.S. Take this to a Staff board you are not breeding Pits. You are breeding Pets that you think are Pits aka Staffs or Bluffs.

I agree with what you are saying here. But I hear the human-dog comparison thrown out so often as an excuse. Example: "No, I'm not going to neuter my dog. He needs to get laid just like any guy." Or "I want my dog to have puppies so she can experience the joys of motherhood." Or "I'm not going to put a leash on my dog. How would you feel being tied up?" It bugs me. Yes, I believe they are sentient creatures, and I love my dog like I love any other member of my family. I sometimes make human-dog comparisons myself. I liken breed laws to racial discrimination. But there's a fine line there. Dogs are still animals, and we are still supposed to be the smarter ones of the pair. Dogs don't read the newspapers or feel guilt by hearing about other members of their breed dying in shelters. Pit Bulls don't know their breed is in trouble, and they don't adjust their behaviors accordingly. That's all I'm sayin'. Does that make sense to anyone?

^Yes. Animals should be treated like animals first and foremost. They do not think or behave like us. They don't need or want sex like we do. They won't know the difference between being a mother and not being a mother. I doubt my pup sits here and thinks about female dogs throughout the day.:)
