Secure fencing

Discussion in 'Dog Discussion' started by DogMan-GameAPBT, Nov 1, 2015.

  1. I need to securely fence half an acre to safely keep my dogs in. I dont want to use chain link because I dont want people to be able to see in. I am also trying to cut costs, I am looking at vinyl fencing but dont have any exp with it. I am wondering if this stuff is going to be strong/tuff enough?

any other suggestions rather then chainlink?

Never used vinyl, wood can get expensive and chain link can be covered so you can't see in

I use wood 6' privacy fencing for property lines and chain link for a divider fence to separate my yard in sections. My neighbors can't see my dogs. Half an acre is probably going to be a bit of a price regardless of what you use. Chain link is cheaper and comes in rolls rather then 8' sections. Plus poles are easier to put in the ground than 4x4 wood posts are. All will work for what your looking to do so go with whats most economical for you..

fencing is better than chains right? that they cannot say you've chained them?

  4. thats a good suggestion, what type of cover is that?

the privacy netting I come across is somewhat see through that I see most people have up on their fences which pretty much defeats the purpose.

No, IMO chaining is better. Kennel dogs tend to become a neurotic animal. My dogs are on all on 10' chains behind that barrier. I seperated my yard so my daughter can still play with her friends and what not in our backyard but behind that fence is the mad lab.... ;)

I bought it online a few years ago. Not positive what they call it but it's for privacy for construction sites. If you google chain link privacy fence covering or something to that effect I'm sure it will come up. It comes in like 8 different colors. I went with forest green because of the canopy of trees I have above my dogs area. Makes everything blend in real nice and private and it makes it so my yard isn't an eyesore to my neighbors. Most who come here don't even know I have dogs back there.

How do you stop a dog from becoming neurotic while in a kennel?

Don't put it in one? Lol
Im not against using them. I have 2. I just only use them when someone else's dog is here to be bred. Every dog I've had in a kennel for its normal living area became neurotic pacers. Back and fouth back and fourth all day long. Like zoo animals do. I just prefer chains. More room, less confinement and more effective.

I have a vinyl fence it holds up good with a crazy dalmatian and few pound dogs now it was expensive and probably going to be the most costly option then wood then chain link but vinyl will hold up good to wind and dogs jumping up against it but if you have a dog that chews on stuff probably won't be as good as chain link

Only way I have right now to keep my animals right now. I just thought their was a way to keep my dogs without them having that

A responsible dogman can also be a responsible father, good post and great way to keep the kids and dogs play areas seperate...

Thanks. I would feel terrible if one of my daughters friends got back to my dog area and got hurt somehow and while none of my dogs are human aggressive per say, they are all very wild on their chain. A leg could get wrapped up by a chain or the kids could get jumped on and knocked down etc. Too many risks IMO by not keeping the dogs seperated from the rest of my backyard and providing a safe area for my kids to play with their friends without having access to the dogs. I lock the entrance gate just to make sure no kid ends up getting too curious and going back there. Appreciate the kind words EP.

There isn't anything wrong with keeping dogs in kennels provided they are taken out and exercised from time to time. Many become pacers though and my opinion is based specifically on that. I always hated looking back there and seeing a dog going back and forth every time I look back there. They never look happier than when they are on their chains. Well, they are probably a bit happier when they get to come in my house and be on a couch but that's rare and with more than a few dogs would very time consuming as well as challenging. Many places you just don't have a choice due to tethering laws. I don't think I'll ever have to worry about that here in PA. Many people use dogs to hunt around here so seeing multiple dogs on tie outs is a pretty common sight here. In the end, you just have to go with what works for you best. I use both methods but l just prefer the chain way. I truly believe my dogs are happier on them too.

your best bet is to use chainlink and then plant evergreen shrubs outside of the border, preventing the prying eyes. ive been looking into this the past couple years trying to figure out the most cost effective way, so far this is the best ive come with. no need for treated 4x4's, too expensive... use landscape timbers and they work the same.
good choices for shrubs are oleanders (although theyre poisonous),italian cypress, wax myrtles,ect...

I'm thinking, using trees to cover 1/2 acre of fencing is not going to be a cheap date. That's alot of trees.
